I saw a post on the-brick-house the other day about a dollhouse challenge, the I'm A Giant Challenge. There is a group of bloggers who are building dollhouses and decorating them as their dream homes. They also encouraged anyone to join in. I was pretty intrigued by the idea of being able to make any "house" you could imagine. The first thing that popped into my head was a geodesic dome home. I've always wanted to build a geodesic home because of the unique shape and the challenge the geometric shape presents, but I already have a house I need to finish first! Well, now I finally get to build one, sort of. I messed around yesterday after work and put together a "2V" dome using pieces of 1/4" plywood, but then decided to go with a "3V". They are the same size dome, but the 3V has almost twice as many triangles as the 2V. You can read about the geometry and math here.
Anyways, I know I have more important things I need to be working on, but Roxy and I have become consumed by this. She's been sending me emails of tiny little miniature furniture, appliances, and even miniature iPads for the past two days. It's amazing how much dollhouse stuff exists out there. I've got some ideas for this thing that I can't wait to attempt. I'm also very excited to see what other people come up with! I promise this won't become the whole blog.
It’s funny you say that because when I had it upside down, I thought about making smaller ones for bowls and lamps. I also thought about a chicken coop (once I have chickens). Im planning on just glueing the joints, can’t really use a biscuit because of the angles. Thanks for the compliment!
How are you attaching them together? Biscuit joints? I think you should keep making these for all sorts of different things…You could turn it upside down and make decorative bowls, nesting geometric bowls, salad bowls, or even really cool lampshades, terrarium planters, wall sconces, or make a huge oversized one for a coffee table base, and I could buy them all! I love the shape, its beautiful as is all your woodworking!

Whatever happened with this challenge? I am looking everywhere for a post about the final reveals. Any updates?
Thanks!

This is SO COOL! I have been interested in Geodesic Domes for years! I very much want a geodesic dome greenhouse, but I think it would incite a riot if I were to erect one in my backyard in our VERY conventional neighborhood. (I really need a farm or some land.)
[…] wanted to do some kind of “update” on the geodesic dollhouse I’m doing for the I’m A Giant challenge since it’s been quite a while since […]
woahhH!! love it! i always wondered if living in one of these domes would be like walking around in a cave…must be cosy….:P
Looks amaaazing. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Elf miniatures has some accessories (like mini faucets) if you want to build your own bathroom or kitchen from scratch.
